Amid the coronavirus pandemic, most people are scrambling to make ends meet. Most things are not easily available. The concept of finding everything you are looking for under one roof has gone for a toss. While FMCG companies have witnessed a sharp decline in consumption there is one product that has seen a big surge in demand in recent times. The product in question is common salt!

As per the Confederation Of All India Traders (CAIT), the demand for salt has increased four times than before the lockdown in Mumbai and surrounding areas. Prior to the lockdown, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the city had a daily demand of 2.5 lakh kilos of salt but after the lockdown was imposed, the demand has skyrocketed to 10 lakh kilos of salt on a daily basis.

According to the traders, the increase has been caused due to people using salt to cleanse the vegetables in hot water mixed with salt. Owing to such a sudden rise, the traders have claimed that soon they might experience a shortage of salt in the market. As per a Maharashtra Times report, there has been no impact on the supply chain of salt so far and the markets have a 20 per cent excess of salt in stock to meet up the current demand.

Currently, 15 brands and 15 small-scale companies are overlooking the supply of salt in Mumbai. The supply of salt has been sufficient and therefore, CAIT Mumbai President, Shankar Thakkar has claimed that there won't be a shortage.

Thakkar told Maharashtra Times, "In the past few days, the demand for salt has increased four-fold. The reason behind it is people using salt and hot water to sanitise the vegetables to avoid coronavirus infection. However, despite an increase in demand, we have enough salt. There won't be a shortage in the market."
