Ahead of the Diwali festivity, the Mumbai police have banned the use and sale of flying lanterns, which are also known as Chinese lanterns, across the city for 30 days. This will come into force from October 16 till November 14.

The order was issued to prevent any illegal activities by anti-social elements through the sky lanterns during the same period.

Moreover, the use of such lanterns may cause danger to human life and safety due to "the situation prevailing in areas under the control of Mumbai police", said official.

Order further added that some checks must be put on flying lantern activities like its use, sale and storage in the city to prevent activities of anti-social elements, the order said. Any person contravening this order shall be punishable under section 188 (Disobeying the order of public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In addition, earlier this month, the Maharashtra government has announced a package for ration card holders, wherein they will receive some food items for just ₹100 in all fair price shops and this offer is valid for 30 days.

Apart from this, the government recently announced a bonus to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) employees, a special package of INR 750 crores to farmers, and on Tuesday declared to provide a 500 sq.ft home at INR 15 lakhs to police personnel in redeveloped BDD chawls.
