On Thursday, June 25 Maharashtra Cabinet Minister of Tourism and Environment, Aaditya Thackeray, announced that eight beaches across Maharashtra will now have Beach Shacks. These will be replicates of the ones currently available in Goa, and the aim behind the move is to promote tourism across the state.

Besides this, seven Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) owned properties - two lands and five  MTDC resorts - will also be available for development, and will be given on a lease or a joint venture for 90 years. This move will help boost tourism and help the state in generating revenue.

His messages on Twitter read, "Today I’m thankful to my cabinet colleagues for passing two key policies for tourism development in Maharashtra. 1) Beach Shacks: 8 beaches in Maharashtra have been approved for eco-friendly Beach Shacks. This will be a major tourist facility. 80% employment to locals is a must. 2)7 properties of the MTDC will be up for lease/ JV for 90 years. This will help the State with increased revenue and most importantly build a world-class tourism hospitality sector in Maharashtra with partnerships with the best hotel brands in the world. I thank the tourism dept colleagues for pushing these policies that will give Maharashtra tourism a major boost. "

As per the decision taken, the shacks will be at these eight beaches in Maharashtra

  • Kelwa and Bordi in Palghar
  • Guhagar and Aareware in Ratnagiri
  • Kunakeshwar and Tarkarli in Sindhudurg
  • Varsoli and Diveagar in Raigad

Further, these beaches can have only 10 Shacks of 15 by 15 feet, with a 20 feet by 15 feet shade. They can be open from 7 AM to 7 PM and should provide at least 80 per cent employment to the locals. The shacks should be equipped with CCTV cameras and a sound limit will also apply.

Businesses and people who are interested in putting up the shacks can apply on the state tourism website, and the government will soon announce the policies for the same in a phase-wise manner. The license initially will be given for three years and can be obtained by the Department of Tourism after submitting a non-refundable application fee of is ₹15,000 and a refundable deposit of ₹30,000.

One will also have to pay an annual fee of ₹45,000 for the first year, ₹50,000 for the second year and ₹55,000 for the third year of the contract.
