The Maharashtra government has been told to fully enforce toll exemptions for electric vehicles within the next eight days. The order came after many EV owners complained that toll amounts were still being deducted even though the state already had a policy that allowed EVs to travel toll-free. The directive was issued by Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar during the Nagpur session. He called the continued toll collection “illegal” and demanded immediate action.
As per reports, Narwekar told authorities to refund all toll money that was wrongly charged to EV owners. He said the state must create a proper system to return the deducted amounts. He also asked toll systems to be updated so that every registered EV is correctly identified.
The state administration has assured full compliance. Major roads such as the Samruddhi Mahamarg, the Atal Setu, and the Mumbai–Pune Expressway will come under the exemption. They also said that steps are being taken to fix backend issues between FASTag systems and the VAHAN database. These technical errors had classified many EVs incorrectly at toll booths, which led to unwanted deductions.
The order aligns with the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy 2025. This policy offers several benefits for EV buyers. These include tax waivers, registration fee exemptions, and financial subsidies. This will support thousands of EV owners and strengthen the state’s shift toward cleaner transport.
Narwekar also pushed the government to improve charging infrastructure. He said the number of EV users is rising and the state must expand charging stations quickly. He asked officials to upgrade existing facilities and add new ones to support the growing demand.
The government is expected to release updated operational guidelines soon. It will also announce the process for issuing refunds. Officials have said that corrective measures are already underway and that full compliance will be achieved within the given deadline.
