In a latest development, it has come to light that the Brihnamumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Budget 2022-23 is expected to focus more on infrastructure, health, and the Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP).

BMC Budget 2022-23 will be presented before the standing committee by municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal today, February 3, around 10-11 am.

Moreover, in a relief to Mumbaikars, no new taxes are likely to be announced in the last budget before the civic body goes to the polls in the next few months.

Besides, the BMC is likely to extend financial aid to the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking.

According to a civic body data, around 45 per cent of the funds allocated for development works in the 2021-22 budget have been spent by December 30, 2021.

The development works included construction, repair and maintenance works undertaken by the roads, bridges, stormwater drain, sewerage operation, health and solid waste management departments of BMC.

On the other hand, big-ticket infrastructure projects such as Coastal Road, Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR), river rejuvenation, and desalination plants will continue to receive substantial allocation. Such major projects have logged a major expenditure with a sum of INR 1998.04 crores. Nearly 99 per cent has been utilised from the allocation of INR 2,000.07 crore for the project.

Meanwhile, political analysts believe that the budget is more likely to focus on wooing voters, instead of presenting a true picture of the corporation’s fiscal health as the elections are approaching.
