According to latest development, it has come to light that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Elections (BMC) 2022 are likely to get delayed.

This comes with the State Election Commission (SEC) laying out the schedule for the run-up to the BMC polls and stating that final list of ward boundaries will be published on March 2.

Meanwhile, days after the SEC formally accepted the draft submitted by the civic body on increase in the number of wards from 227 to 236 for the upcoming elections, the BMC has issued programme for the publication of draft ward boundaries.

As per reports, out of the total 236 wards, 15 wards are reserved for ST and 2 wards for SC, while the remaining 219 wards have been kept in the general category.

On the other hand, hearing is going on in the Supreme Court to discontinue OBC reservation in the polls.

Here’s the timeline for ward formation process:

  • BMC publishes state election commission notification related to civic body ward boundaries in the media on February 1.
  • From February 1 to February 14, BMC will keep open the suggestions and objections from general public on demarcated ward boundaries.
  • Thereafter, on February 16, BMC will inform SEC about what kind of suggestions and objections they have received.
  • The BMC has been allowed to organise hearings for the members of the public who have given suggestions and objections till February 26.
  • By March 2, the concerned officer of the BMC has been directed to submit the suggestions to the SEC.

The elections will be declared after the completion of the ward formation process, said sources. According to reports, the corporation election is held every five years and was initially supposed to be held in February. However, the dates have, however, not been announced yet.
