Father Stan Swamy passes away at 84; Funeral to take place in Mumbai today

Swamy had suffered a cardiac arrest on July 4 early morning. He was put on a ventilator then, but he never regained consciousness following the cardiac arrest. He was finally declared dead on Monday afternoon.

Tribal activist Father Stan Swamy, who was imprisoned in the Bhima Koregaon case, passed away on Monday, July 5, ahead of his bail hearing in the Bombay High Court.

His lawyers moved the Bombay High Court on Monday morning, seeking an urgent hearing on his medical bail plea after his health deteriorated on Sunday and was put on ventilator support.

The 84-year-old Jesuit priest was admitted to Holy Family hospital where he was undergoing treatment following a court order on May 28.

Doctors at Holy Family Hospital, Bandra, informed the Bombay High Court that Swamy, 84, passed away around 1.30 pm.

The bench, comprising Justices SS Shinde and NJ Jamadar, expressed shock over the news and said it was at a loss of words and hoped Swamy's soul would rest in peace.

The HC also recorded in its order that Swamy's funeral will be held in Mumbai in accordance with the COVID-19 protocols applicable in the city.

Father Frazer Mascarenhas will be handed over Swamy's mortal remains on Tuesday, June 6. The Funeral will be held on Tuesday afternoon, July 6, followed by cremation in Mumbai itself.

Tributes poured in from supporters of activist Stan Swamy, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case.

Father Mascarenhas, who is Swamy's friend, said that it is a huge tragedy and sad to see that a person, who devoted all his life to the poor, the advisasis, for their rights, was denied his human rights.

The doctor said Swamy recovered from coronavirus, but had lung complications, and was also a known case of Parkinson's disease.
