Swiggy riders in Mumbai have started an indefinite strike. The protest, which started on October 8, is aimed at securing better wages and improved working conditions. The strike has been organised by the Rashtriya Karamchari Sena, a workers’ organisation associated with the ruling Shiv Sena party in Maharashtra.

This has led to disruptions in Swiggy’s delivery services across several neighbourhoods in Mumbai, including Bandra, Dadar, and parts of South Mumbai.

In a video posted on social media platforms, the protesting riders can be heard requesting "higher payouts". The video also shows the protesting riders participating in bike rallies and holding placards to voice their demands.

As of now, Swiggy has not issued a statement regarding the ongoing strike.

The earnings of delivery executives are composed of several elements, including compensation per order based on distance travelled, incentive money, and surge pay. According to a report by the news agency mint.com, the riders used to earn INR 100 per order, but now this number has dropped to only INR 40.

Netizens immediately took the opportunity of this escalating strike situation to turn it into memes.

This is not the first time food delivery app riders have gone on strike. In 2019, Zomato delivery executives in Mumbai and Bengaluru went on a mass strike on Monday to protest against the restaurant aggregator's decision to slash incentives which gives less money per delivery.

A few months ago, a similar protest took place in Chennai over demands for higher compensation per order. Earlier this year, riders from Zomato-owned Blinkit also went on strike in Delhi-NCR over changes in the payout system.
