With the partial opening of four new lines this year, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's (MMR) network of metro rail routes is gradually coming together. These consist of lines 2B, 4, 4A, and 9, which are dispersed throughout Thane and Mira Road in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai.
In addition, the second phase of metro line 3, which would connect Worli's Acharya Atre Chowk to the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is anticipated to open in March.
According to Maharashtra government authorities, 19 metro stations spread throughout the four additional lines, totalling 20.3 km, are close to completion. Thane's first metro line will be the longest of all four metro routes that will be opening in 2025.
Moreover, following the opening of lines 4 and 4A, which will serve 10 stations, citizens will be able to commute from Cadbury Junction to Gaimukh.
The initial section of line 2B, which would run from Mandale in Mankhurd to Diamond Garden in Chembur and span 5.3 kilometres with five stations, will be operating in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai. When the line is finished, it will reach DN Nagar in Andheri West and join line 2A, which runs between DN Nagar and Dahisar. Additionally, line 2B will link to metro line 8, which connects the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports, and the Central Railway's suburban line at Kurla.
This year, metro line 9, which will run 4.5 kilometres from Dahisar to Kashigaon and connect Mira Road and Bhayandar, will also be partially completed with four stations. The current line 7 (Gundavali to Dahisar) will be extended by this. It will eventually link to Line 10 (Chowk at Mira Road, Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk).
According to state government authorities, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been requested to accelerate the building of these four metro tracks. Interestingly, automobile depots won't be prepared for any of these routes by the time they partially open.
Due to the lack of depot land, a senior government official stated that train operations on Lines 4 and 4A have been planned by providing inspection pits along the alignment following the terminal station at Gaimukh. While depots are being built, they have been encouraged to make the most of the station infrastructure and viaducts that are already in place.
Public transit will be enhanced by the partial inauguration of the four new lines, said AV Shenoy, a member of the Mumbai Mobility Forum. According to him, the government should make sure that last-mile connection is resolved and that travel on these metro lines is made reasonably priced.
