The much-awaited Himalaya foot over bridge (FOB) is finally set to open in March, four years after its tragic collapse that resulted in the deaths of seven people and injury of several others.

It is pertinent to note that the bridge, located outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai, has faced several challenges, including the COVD-19-induced pandemic, but now the rebuilding process is now nearing completion.

According to an engineer involved in the construction, the work of joining the girders is currently in full swing and efforts are being made to complete the remaining work within the next month.

The BMC had initially expected to complete the project within 15 months and at a cost of INR 5.75 crores. The contractors appointed for the project were M/s Pinaki Constructions and the new foot over bridge will have a warranty period of at least five years.

According to a civic official stated that 85 per cent of the work is over. Last month, the BMC was completing the placement of girders, which were made in Bhubaneswar. The installing of girders will not take time.

However, the construction process was not without its challenges, said a civic official.

Explaining further, official shared that the underground utilities such as water lines and cables had to be managed before construction of the pillars could begin. Additionally, there was an issue of unavailability of land to widen the bridge. These factors, along with the pandemic, contributed to delays in the project.

It was previously reported that the remaining task of placing the escalators was expected to take another four months. After the collapse, with contemplation, the BMC had decided not to proceed with the installation of escalators. Instead, it was decided that an escalator and a staircase would be placed at one end of the bridge in 2021.
