In the latest development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Iqbal Singh Chahal on Tuesday, July 13, wrote to the Maharashtra chief secretary seeking exemption from a mandatory RT-PCR negative report for fully vaccinated passengers.

Amid a rise in the coronavirus in the wake of second-wave, the civic body had made it compulsory for all domestic passengers arriving in Mumbai to produce an RT-PCR test report, issued within 48 hours of the beginning of the journey.

The restrictions were initially put into place for passengers arriving from Gujarat, Goa, Rajasthan, Delhi and Kerala. Later, this rule was extended to all domestic passengers arriving in Mumbai in a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19.

However, as coronavirus cases continue to decline, Chahal issued a directive exempting fully vaccinated people to enter the city through the Mumbai airport.

In a letter to Maharashtra chief secretary, Chahal mentioned that there are many passengers who are taking up the journey to Delhi or other business places in the morning and they are returning back on the same day in the evening or next day morning, in such case conducting the RT-PCR test and getting the report becomes impossible.

The COVID-19 vaccination drive was underway across the country and many citizens, who are fully vaccinated, have been requesting that the RT-PCR negative test report norm be waived off, the letter further stated.

Meanwhile, the BMC also extended vaccination for people travelling abroad for higher studies or work and athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympics to six days, earlier it was restricted to three days a week.
