The Maharashtra government on Monday, April 12, issued fresh guidelines for the celebration of Gudi Padwa, which falls on April 13 this year. Moreover, the government has urged the citizens to have a low-key celebration similar to all other festivals since the outbreak of the pandemic.

This notification comes amid an alarming spike in coronavirus cases in the state. The second wave of COVID-19 has hit Maharashtra adversely.

The official statement by the Uddhav Thackeray-led government has warned to take strict action against people flouting the COVID-related norms.

Here are the guidelines:

- Any procession or bike rally will not be allowed.

- Not more than five people should gather in public places.

- Besides, as per the already imposed night curfew, no gatherings or celebrations will be allowed after 8 pm at both public and private premises.

- All shops except essentials and medical services will be shut.

Meanwhile, the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) has urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to allow the opening of jewellery retail stores in the state during the festive occasion of Gudi Padwa (New Year for Maharashtrians), which is an important day for buying wedding jewellery. In a letter written to the CM on Wednesday, GJC said Gudi Padwa is one of the most important festivals for Maharashtra, and every year, the jewellery business witnesses a 30-40 per cent spike in sales.

Apart from that, the fresh restrictions imposed in Maharashtra to contain the spread of the virus is likely to impact the festive season auto sales, as Navaratri and Gudi Padwa are falling in April, experts suggest.

State health minister Rajesh Tope on Sunday talking to the reporters mentioned that an appropriate decision regarding imposing a lockdown in Maharashtra will be taken after April 14.

Tope made this statement after attending the virtual meeting of the COVID-19 task force. This meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to discuss measures, including the imposition of a lockdown in the state, to break the virus chain.
