Maharashtra Bandh: Mumbai Police tightens security in the city

The shutdown has been called by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies -- the Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress -- to protest the killing of four farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri.

In the wake of Maharashtra bandh, the Mumbai Police said that it will deploy the maximum manpower at their disposal on the streets today, October 11, to prevent any untoward incident.

The police official said patrolling will be intensified.

"Three companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), 500 Home Guard personnel and 400 men from the Local Arms units are already deployed as additional manpower for the ongoing Navratri festival security. But, keeping the bandh in mind, Mumbai Police will use the maximum manpower to tackle any situation. Police bandobast will be stepped up on streets on Monday," said the police in an official release.

The shutdown will be enforced from midnight on Sunday. Nawab Malik said, "We appeal to all workers not to create any problems for essential services like hospital, ambulance, medical services, milk supply during the shutdown."

Trade unions have joined the Maharashtra Bandh on Monday and decided to keep the Pune Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) closed. Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard Traders Association has announced that all fruit, vegetable, onion and potato markets will be closed on Monday.

A total of eight people including four farmers died in violence in the Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh that took place on October 3.
