According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is considering restoring the "pyaus" across south Mumbai. These are drinking water fountains which were built in the 19th century near trading hubs and open-air markets to ensure that drinking water is easily accessible to all.
Based on accounts, the civic authority has been pondering conducting the restoration project for a while but sans any success. The BMC is now considering tracing all the drinking water fountains that have over the years disappeared. They seek to do so through plaques or dummy installations.
A narrative by the Indian Express suggests that the idea of restoring the drinking water fountains was initiated by a firm that works toward heritage conservation. The firm, Vasstu Vidhaan has submitted a proposal to the civic body for mapping the present 22 drinking water fountains.
It has been reported that from the 22 drinking water fountains, the BMC had restored a mere four which were all located in Byculla's Veermata Jijabai Bhosle Udyan (Byculla Zoo). However, for the last three years, it has been attempting to restore the other drinking water fountains in Mumbai.
The account quoted a senior civic official who elaborated on how the civic body commenced the restoration process with the four drinking water fountains and many smaller projects were taken to restore them across Mumbai. Now, they wish to restore the remaining 18 together. This they say will ensure that the circuit is launched. Further, the official added that administrative approval will be sought in accordance with the project's costing which is underway. The official claimed that considering the project's magnitude, previously they had decided to take it up in parts with the drinking water fountains also being restored as isolated projects.
