While preparing for Mumbai rains, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) sent out notices to 9,000 housing societies in Mumbai to either trim or cut dangerous trees on their premises, reported the Free Press Journal. In accordance with the notice, it has been reported that by July 13, 8,300 societies trimmed the trees, However, 700 societies continue to have dangerous trees that are required to be trimmed.

Based on the report, 356 trees and 514 branches have fallen across Mumbai in the past 43 days. In the midst of this, environmentalists claim that the way in which the trees are being trimmed is weakening their roots.

Prior to the commencement of the monsoon, the civic body assesses dangerous trees across Mumbai and gets them trimmed. The onus for the trees on private premises is on the owner of the property. But, after inspection, the BMC issues a notice to the housing society or the landowner to trim or cut any tree or branch that could prove to be dangerous to people, the account mentioned.

The narrative quoted a civic official elaborating on how across Mumbai there are 15.5 lakh trees on private premises. Further, from the 9,000 notices sent, the BMC team trimmed nearly 1,50,000 trees on the roads and removed 523 dead or dangerous trees before the monsoon began.

The report also quoted Jitendra Pardeshi, garden Superintendent who elucidated that they have held a workshop for their staff by revered arborists for scientific tree trimming. He shared that while 700 societies have commenced the process of trimming trees on their premises, they are appealing to citizens to not stand under a tree during incessant rainfall to avert mishaps.
