Following the injury of two bullocks at a protest in Antop Hill, the Honorary District Animal Welfare Officer, Sunish Subramanian, has asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VI) to register an FIR against Congress leader Bhai Jagtap and other members of the party that were involved in the protest.

Congress party workers were protesting against the significant rise in fuel prices across the country with the help of a bullock cart. However, the overcrowding of people meant that the cart couldn’t hold onto the weight and collapsed, consequently injuring the two bullocks.

Subramanian has asked the police to book all members that were on the cart as per the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act, 1960.

“They used a bullock cart for a protest and overcrowded it. A bullock cart cannot take this much load. This is cruelty to animals. Politicians often use animals for protests. I have told the police to not allow anyone to use animals for protests or election campaigning,” Subramanian said.

“The police should book those riding on the cart and its owner who is equally responsible. The video is the prime evidence in the case. I have written to the Antop Hill police station, the Election Commission, and the Collector to take strict action,” he added.

Fuel prices have continued to rise over the past few weeks with petrol costing as much as ₹106.25 per litre whereas diesel was at ₹97.18 per litre as of July 9.
