The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its five-day forecast has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on Monday, June 26, and Tuesday, June 27, indicating heavy rainfall in isolated places.

Mumbai is likely to see moderate rainfall during the period.

Independent meteorologists say monsoon circulation itself has been weak, but the active phase is expected to begin soon.

Moreover, IMD has issued a forecast of moderate rain for the city as well as adjoining areas from June 24 for the next three days. On the other hand, the weather department scientists said that rains are expected by this weekend.

Nevertheless, experts are uncertain if this substantial rainfall deficit can be compensated during the active rain phase next week.

Mumbai has so far received just 5 per cent (17. 9mm) of the required rainfall (342.1mm) for June. This development came at a time when only eight days left for the first monsoon month to end.

The average June rain stands at 526. 3mm in case of the India Meteorological Department, Santacruz.

The onset of monsoon too has not been declared as rains continue to evade the city.

Experts have further stated that the rainfall situation may improve from June 25, as a low pressure system is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal and move towards Madhya Pradesh.
