People in Mumbai seem to have a strange love-hate relationship with rain. While some find rain a mesmerising sight, yet one cannot overlook the fact that these rains also have the power to bring the island city to a standstill. As Mumbai gets ready to bid farewell to monsoon for this season, here are some interesting facts. The island city has already recorded its wettest-ever monsoon, with 3,458.2mm rain between June and September 15. This is despite a 15-day delay in the season’s onset.
According to the reports by the disaster management cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra government, before 2019, the all-time record for rainfall was in 3,451.6 mm in 1954. The reports are prepared on the basis of data provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

However, IMD refused to confirm that the record had been broken by stating that they would need to check their entire data repository. KS Hosalikar, deputy director-general, western region, IMD confirmed to Hindustan Times that the rainfall had been the highest since 2001 but he said that they would have to go through the past record to confirm if the record for all-time high rainfall had been broken.

Meanwhile, the city has already surpassed the 900-mm rainfall mark for September by Sunday. So far, Mumbai has recorded 904.3mm from September 1 to September 15 (8.30pm), which is merely 0.3mm short of the September 1993 record of 904.6mm. However, the all-time record is in 1954 when Mumbai had been lashed by 920mm over 30 days.
