Update: Mumbai Bandh called off; Here's what happened through the day

State wise bandh has been called on Wednesday in regards to Bhima Koregaon protest in Mumbai. However, selected schools, University exams, government offices and ministry to function as normal and planned. School buses and Dabbawalas to not operate on Wednesday keeping the safety in mind.

The city observed violent protests today wherein many parts of Mumbai and Thane were affected by angry protesters who damaging buses, staged rail roko,  forcefully shut shops, blocked roads on Tuesday. The issue began between two groups eventually leading to the death of a youth in Pune. The groups had gathered together to mark the bicentenary celebrations to mark of a British-Peshwa war. Owing to the day-long protest, Dalit groups had called for a bandh across the state on Wednesday, in regards to the violence which was seen in many parts of the state, affected many especially in Pune.

This has raised many questions about the daily happenings and routine in the city. Here are some points you need to keep in mind about what will be functioning in the city and what wouldn't. Below mentioned points are based on the information received from the official authorities, associations or departments. 


4:10 PM: Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh's chief Prakash Ambedkar calls off protests #MumbaiBandh

3:50 PM: Ghatkopar station area cleared and protestors evacuated from tracks, services resumed.

3:30 PM: Traffic congestion at Mela junction and Worli Naka. Hence traffic diverted at Haji Ali through Mahalaxmi/ Sena Pati Bapat Marg.

People are advised to take Mahalaxmi- Senapati Bapat Road- Pandurang Bhuskar Marg- JK Kapur Chowk- Sea Link.

3:20 PM: People residing nearby railway tracks are providing water to the people who are walking on tracks and commuters as well.

3:00 PM: Protestors allowed the ambulance to pass in Mulund. Medical shops are kept open.

1:10 PM: AC local services have been canceled for today due to protests.

10:50 AM: Rasta roko at Ghatkopar-Sakinaka road
Rasta Roko by locals against alleged abusive language by police on Ghatkopar Sakinaka road near Jagruti Nagar metro station. Stones were also pelted on a BEST bus at Barvenagar in Ghatkopar.

10:00 AM - Update info abt Maharashtra Bandh frm BEST traffic control at 0925 hrs: BEST buses not running on this route:  Kandivali- Akurli, Dindoshi-Hanuman Nagar, Chandivali-Sangharsh Nagar, Khairani Rd- Sakinaka, Sahar Cargo, Mulund Check Naka, Jijamata Nagar. No stone pelting incidents -DMU

Schools and colleges to function as normal

The State Government and ministers have not declared an official holiday for schools and colleges in the city. Mumbai University shall also be functioning as normal. However, some private schools in the city have declared a holiday for their respective students and staff, on personal grounds, keeping the security in mind.

School Buses shall not operate on Wednesday

The School Bus Association in Mumbai has also decided to not run the school buses. As per the information received from the association, Anil Garg, President School buses association, Maharashtra said 


SBOA declares school buses will not run tomorrow keeping the safety of children in mind. However, if the situation is in control in the morning, a decision would be taken for the afternoon shift. Since it is beyond our control the association has decided not to take risk. It is up to individual operators to decide to close or not .after seeing the situation.

MU examinations to be conducted as planned

As per reports, around 13 examinations are scheduled for Wednesday. So far, no decision has been taken regarding the postponement and hence the examinations of the University of Mumbai will be taken as planned.

Local transport services

Although some local train services in the city were disrupted on Tuesday, the services scheduled for Wednesday will function as per the plan and timings. Few BEST buses were also damaged in the city due to stone pelting, bringing around 20 bus services to a halt. However, the bandh on Wednesday will see the buses functioning as normal. As per mentioned in TOI, the officials at BEST have said that grilles will be installed on windscreens to prevent further damage, and they shall they plan to follow the instructions as per the police. Auto rickshaws and cabs shall function depending on the situation at that moment. No information from them has been released.

Dabbawalas to shut down their services for a day

Keeping the security in mind, Mumbai's Dabbawalas association has decided not to operate their services on Wednesday. Hence, the association will not be delivering tiffins on Maharashtra bandh. 

Ministry, Government offices and Security

The Ministry and all the other government offices will be working on Wednesday. Further, as per the reports, police have been on high alert and watch out for movements across the city. Personnel will be deployed at all locations, including the riot control police and state reserve police force. QRT commandos will also be on alert, to ensure safety across the city.

8:30 AM: Few protestors tried to disrupt Railway services at Thane but were immediately cleared by RPF and GRP officials. Services are running uninterrupted on Central Railway as of now. 

8:22 AM: Traffic in western suburbs, near the airport and Western Express Highway normal.
