Amid a spike in coronavirus infection in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has revealed that 80-85 per cent of cases detected in the city presently are asymptomatic.

Out of 1,200 cases that were detected in the country's financial capital on Wednesday, February 24, 83 per cent of cases were asymptomatic and none of them were critical.

The municipal commissioner has also asked the private hospitals to not admit any asymptomatic patients. Moreover, it has come to light that a lot of younger people seemed to be getting infected in the February surge.

In Maharashtra, around 78 per cent of active cases are in hospitals, whereas in Mumbai 49 per cent are hospitalised as only fewer people are showing any symptoms related to COVID-19 infections.

However, experts believe that this should not stop authorities from scaling up beds. The doctors are also of the view that one must not think any less of the coronavirus after looking at an increase in the asymptomatic cases.

The BMC chief stated that anybody who has tested positive and is asymptomatic must also isolate themselves and monitor their oxygen level as they too can transmit the infection.

According to the data reviewed in the past several weeks stated that asymptomatic patients are in the range of 78-82 per cent of the daily counts mostly.

A senior state official said that the share of asymptomatic patients has always been in the range of 80 per cent and above. The only difference now is that fewer people are running after beds as the fear has reduced. The share of critical patients has always been around 15 per cent.

It has been observed that people are either getting a milder form of COVID-19 where they are complaining of fever, body ache, headache, loss of smell or they are not showing any symptoms at all.

Earlier, IS Chahal has denied that there is a second wave of coronavirus infection in Mumbai as COVID-19 cases spike in the city. However, the next 15 days will be very critical for Mumbai.
