Soon the BMC will install electrical vehicle (EV) charging stations in 10 public parking areas in Mumbai. Accordingly, an agreement has been signed by the civic authorities with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) on Wednesday. In Mumbai, there are 29 public parking areas and out of the 10 that the BMC has identified, four lie in the city area while five are in western suburbs and one is in eastern suburbs.
Central government encouraging the use of EVs in India
Of 1.89 lakh EVs registered in the state, 18,993 are in Mumbai. A civic official said that the BMC is trying to provide 24-hour charging stations to citizens near their homes by undertaking such initiatives with HPCL and in future with other stakeholders.
The central government was promoting use of EVs in India and has issued guidelines to set up charging systems, the BMC had said in its 2023-24 budget. Likewise, in municipal parking lots, the civic body is setting up charging stations and running them through private service providers. Private organisations will bear the cost of setting up the charging stations and on the basis of revenue-sharing principle, the BMC will get revenue.
