Mumbai- The penguin which breathed its last at the Byculla Zoo on Sunday, died due to an infection. This was confirmed by Parel animal hospital’s pathological department. A total of eight penguins were ordered from South Korea's COEX aquarium, and these included three male and five female penguins. These penguins belong to the Humboldt breed and had been kept in the 16-18 degree Celsius temperature enclosure in the Byculla zoo. One penguin died on Sunday.

As per the BMC's agreement with the Korean aquarium, the corporation would have to be re-imbursed in case of the death of any of the animals. The BMC is now planning to ask COEX for a replacement for the dead penguin under the provisions of the agreement, it is learnt.
