An important decision was undertaken in the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, according to which municipal employees who die whilst on coronavirus duty will be provided with an insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh. Thus, the said amount covers either an employee or an officer who died whilst in the line of duty.

The scheme will apply to all Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats except Municipal Corporations of A and B category. This scheme would also include sanitation workers, contract, honorarium and outsourced workers. The said insurance amount will be given to the family members of the deceased employees. The aim is to reduce the adversities in their lives and take a certain portion of the burden off them.

This program comes in the backdrop of many municipal employees losing their lives whilst performing their duties to tackle the coronavirus. Additionally, these employees are also under immense pressure whilst carrying out their responsibilities. The government in order to aid these employees, is offering them treatments, if they face any health-related problems. Thus, the insurance, will not only help the families of those deceased, but will also raise the spirits of those currently on duty, since they are aware that the government has schemes in place for them.
