One of the most congested spots in Mumbai’s Juhu, BP Patel Chowk is an intersection of five roads. In order to make it more pedestrian-friendly, it is set for a revamp, reported the Times of India.

Refuge islands are looked to be constructed at the Patel Chowk which will enable pedestrians to cross the road seamlessly. This project is similar to that undertaken at Jagnade Chowk in Lalbaug a while back.

Renu Hansraj, the local corporator, according to the report elaborated on how the plan was in the pipeline for a while, but owing to the coronavirus pandemic it was stalled. They, however, now want to commence the project soon.

It has been observed by many of the residents in the vicinity that the congestion at the said intersection has only increased through the years. This has resulted in people removing their cars to go to the beach as opposed to walking a few miles, stated the report. The former sheriff of Mumbai and a local Mohanbhai Patel, according to the report mentioned that the intersection leads to the beach and thus many people make use of the said road, he believes that the junction should be reorganized.

A consultant with WRI India, Saurabh Jain, who is assisting with the revamp of the Chowk mentioned that the location of the proposed traffic island is currently unapproachable and is an optical obstacle. He believes that the proposal aims to not only make it approachable for pedestrians, but also offer refuge and curate it for human scale, whilst improving perceptibility. He also added that through this, the beautification will become an eventual byproduct, highlighted the narrative.
