According to latest report, it has come to light that owing to incessant rains at least two dams, which supply water in Mumbai, located in Palghar district have started overflowing while some are flowing above danger mark.

Modak Sagar and Tansa dams have been filled to capacity and are overflowing due to heavy rains since the last one week, reports stated. Meanwhile, Tansa and Vaitarna both are flowing above the danger mark.

In the view of such circumstances, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Palghar district of Maharashtra. Officials have warned the people residing downstream of the Tansa river about the possibility of rising water levels.

Tansa lake has a total of 38 gates, out of which nine gates were opened till 9.50 pm after the Modak Sagar lake reservoir started overflowing. Later, Tansa Lake also started overflowing around 8.50 pm on July 14.

Due to continuous heavy rains in the catchment area, over the past few days, the water level of the reservoirs has increased rapidly, said a government official.

As two gates of the Modak Sagar dam were opened, 239.13 cusecs of water was discharged, he said.

Similarly, nine gates of the Tansa dam were opened and 281.38 cusecs of water was released.

For those unversed, Mumbai city receives its drinking water supply from Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi lakes.
