As Mumbai has a large number of unauthorised hawkers, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has instructed to conduct a fresh survey of street vendors in the city to check their eligibility. The decision was taken in a meeting with senior government and BMC officials on Tuesday.

The government will ensure that the concerned hawker will do business only himself or through his family members and the applicant will have no other means of occupation. The criteria for issuing license include that the hawkers should have a domicile certificate and the license will be would be non-transferable.

As per the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, BMC has to conduct such a survey every five years. Hence, Municipal Corporation had conducted a survey in July 2014 to issue licenses to peddlers. Out of 99,435 hawkers, only 17,500 were found eligible.

However, in this survey, it was alleged that the local corporator did not trust the office bearers of the Municipal Corporation. Therefore, corporators and office bearers will be included in the survey committee.

The meeting was held at Sahyadri Guest House and was attended by ministers like Subhash Desai, Anil Parab, Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar, Principal Advisor Ajoy Mehta, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister's Secretariat Ashish Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Vikas Kharge and Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal.
