Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has gone ahead and stressed the importance of constituting an institution to advise authorities about maintaining the ecological balance in development works.
In a webinar organized by the Forest Department on the occasion of International Biodiversity Day, the Chief Minister has once again made his position on development very clear asserting that the advice given by technical and scientific advisors of such a body would be binding on authorities. He also added that public participation should be encouraged in order to preserve the same.
Meanwhile, the Principal Secretary to CM Vikas Kharge, forest secretary Milind Mhaiskar, chairman of MSBB SH Patil, special technical member of National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) Achalendra Reddy were present on the occasion.
According to reports, CM Thackeray, speaking about the significance of an ecological balance, said that he wanted to encourage the concept of development which goes hand-in-hand with the conservation of nature. "Humans are encroaching on the territory of wild animals and not vice versa. There is a need to create awareness about biodiversity. People's participation is necessary for protecting the environment," he added.
Furthermore, speaking about the Aarey forests, he said, “We saved Aarey forest. We took care of the forest in the city in order to preserve its biodiversity,”
He concluded by stating that with the outbreak of the coronavirus, the people have realized what happens when the “laxman rekha” is crossed. Therefore, the CM in conclusion reiterated that we need to develop the right behaviour to live alongside nature in order to witness a “healthy environment”.
