According to sources, three lakhs will be provided from the Chief Minister's Assistance Fund to the relatives of the victims of the Jilani building accident in Bhiwandi.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has approved the financial assistance from the Chief Minister's Assistance Fund as a special case. Accordingly, total financial assistance of INR 1,14,00,000 will be distributed to the relatives of 38 victims by the Thane District Collector.

At least 38 people were killed when a three-storey building collapsed at the Patel compound in Narpoli in Bhiwandi taluka. The building, located in the Dhamankar Naka area of the city, collapsed back in September last year.

Meanwhile, a four-member inquiry committee was appointed to fully investigate the accident. Earlier, the ward officer and her junior engineer were suspended for negligence in work.

The Bhiwandi-Ulhasnagar and Mumbra belt in the Thane district is known for not complying with the norms when constructing new buildings. Back in 2013, an illegal building which collapsed in Mumbra and claimed the lives of 74 people has been among the worst tragedies in recent years. Moreover, the city has seen building collapses in Dongri, Nagpada and Fort areas.

Illegal constructions, along with a general lack of repair work in the old and dilapidated structures have given birth to the new age problem of building collapses, especially in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Moreover, in several cases, repairs are stuck because of lack of funds and disputes between landlords and the people living in the apartments i.e. the tenants.
