The Maharashtra government on Monday, December 28, issued guidelines for the celebration of New Year’s on December 31. In the wake of new strain of coronavirus, the state has imposed a night curfew from 11 pm to 6 am from December 22, 2020 to January 5, 2021.

Though there is no special curfew in regards to the New Year celebration, Uddhav Thackeray-led government has urged people to welcome 2021 in an extremely simple manner. The state government had issued similar directives for the celebration of all major religious festivals this year taking into account the COVID-19 crisis. It is mandatory for everyone to religiously follow all rules laid down by the Health, Environment and Medical Education departments and the respective Municipal Corporation, police and local administration.

Here are the guidelines to be followed:

1. Citizens should simply welcome the New Year at home on December 31 and January 1 and avoid leaving home.

2. On December 31, or New Year Eve, people have to ensure that there is no overcrowding at public places like beaches, gardens, and roads. Besides, the social distancing norms should be followed along with the use masks and sanitizers.

3. Mumbai's Gateway of India, Marine Lines, Girgaum Chowpatty, Juhu Chowpatty need to take health and safety precaution as they are overcrowded during holiday and festive season.

4. Citizens over the age of 60 and children under the age of 10 should avoid going out of the house.

5. No religious / cultural events or processions should be organized on the occasion of New Year's reception.

6. On the first day of the New Year, many people visit religious places. In such cases, social distancing should be observed without crowding the place at the same time. Also, the concerned authorities should take appropriate precautionary measures in terms of health and hygiene.

7. No bursting of fireworks. The rules regarding noise pollution should be strictly followed.

8. Strict adherence to the rules prescribed by the Government Relief, Health, Environment, Medical Education Department as well as the concerned Municipal Corporation, Police, Local Administration should be done to prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus.

9. Apart from this circular, if any new instructions are issued regarding December 31 and New Year, they should also be complied with. Such instructions have been issued by the Home Department and the citizens should follow them, the department has appealed to the citizens.
