Amid the surge in COVID-19 cases, the Maharashtra government on Saturday, January 8 imposed strict restrictions that included the prohibition of movement in groups of five or more from 5 am to 11 pm which will be effective from January 10 midnight, mentioned a government circular. 

Apart from this, movement isn't permitted in public from 11 pm to 5 am except for essential services, reports stated. Schools and colleges will also be closed till February 15 except for activities needed to be done for grades 10 and 12 pupils as well as administrative activities of teachers. 

Additionally, at government offices, visitors will not be permitted except with the written permission of the office heads. Moreover, online interaction opportunities will be offered for individuals by means of a video conference. Government offices have also been asked to opt for work from home and staggered working hours if work from the office is needed, remarked the circular.

On the other hand, private offices have also been asked to rationalise the number of employees physically coming to the premises by permitting work from home and staggering working hours. 

Attendance at marriages, social, religious, cultural or political gatherings has been capped at 50. Similarly, at funerals over 20 people cannot be present.

Swimming pools, gyms, spas, wellness centres, beauty salons will be closed. Haircutting salons can function at 50 per cent capacity. Sporting events have been deferred, except those at the national and international levels that have already been scheduled. Such events will be held without spectators and the curation of a bio-bubble for the players and officials. According to the circular, RT-PCR and Rapid Antigen Tests will be compulsory for players and officials on every third day of the event. 

Moreover, entertainment parks, zoos, museums, forts, other ticketed venues for the public will be closed. Shopping malls, market complexes can function at 50 per cent capacity, information about the current number of visitors should be put up on the noticeboard. Only those fully vaccinated will be permitted to enter malls, shopping complexes. These have to be closed after 10 pm.

Restaurants and eateries will too operate at 50 per cent capacity, with the current number of visitors being displayed on the notice board. These too can only remain open till 10 pm. Cinema theatres, drama halls will function at 50 per cent capacity.

Public transport can be used only by those fully vaccinated. Where hall tickets have been issued for competitive exams, they will be conducted in accordance with the central government guidelines.

All other future exams will be held only after attaining permission from the State Disaster Management Authority, remarked the circular.
