The Maharashtra state government has decided to set up a committee to create a uniform policy for CCTV systems to bring consistency in how CCTV cameras are installed, maintained, and managed.

The government said a single set of guidelines is needed because CCTV surveillance now covers most public spaces, housing societies, stores, malls, theatres, and business organisations. The policy will guide technical specifications, related equipment, repair and maintenance, and overall execution.

A nine-member committee has been formed to work on the policy. It includes the additional chief secretaries of the finance, urban development, and public works departments; the director general of police; the principal secretaries of the information technology and rural development departments; the transport commissioner; and the principal secretary (special) in the home department, who will serve as the member secretary.

The government order states that the decision comes after discussions in the state legislature. Several state departments have also previously received detailed recommendations on the setup and management of CCTV networks. The committee will now review these recommendations and draft a comprehensive policy for the entire state.

The new policy will make sure of standard practices across all sectors using CCTV surveillance, making monitoring and maintenance more organised and effective.
