Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Tuesday, July 27, declared that a new strategy is being prepared for easing restrictions in the districts with low weekly positivity rates (WPR).

Clarifying it further, Tope mentioned that the exception would be made only for districts with fewer fatalities and a weekly positivity rate of 1-2 per cent. Meanwhile, districts with a weekly positivity rate (WPR) of around five per cent would continue to remain under restrictions.

According to reports, out of the total 35 districts in Maharashtra, there are nearly 13 to 14 districts that have been recording a WPR of 0.1%-0.9%. These districts definitely need some relaxation for economic revival, Tope said.

Moreover, he stated that there are also districts that have been recording a WPR of above one per cent, but lower than the state average for at least three weeks. These districts will be placed in a separate category.

Meanwhile, these districts will be permitted to relax restrictions such as allowing businesses and movement for extended hours. In addition, districts with higher WPRs may also be considered for separate categories of relaxations.

Tope further added that the broad outline has been prepared based on local conditions, however, districts can take a call after assessing their WPR. Moreover, this has been readied with the help of the state task force. However, all care will be taken to ensure that even as relaxations are given, there are no violations of COVID-19 protocols.

The proposal will be submitted this week for final approvals from the chief minister, he concluded.

On Monday, July 26, Maharashtra became the first state in the country to fully vaccinate over one crore people against coronavirus.
