The Maharashtra government has given a green light to an upgrade in prison security systems. This move comes under the scheme called 'Modernisation of Security Systems in Prisons'. A sum of INR 45 crore has been set aside for this.

The funds will be used to acquire a panic alarm system, a full-height turnstile gate (biometric access system), a public address system, and CCTV cameras.

These proposals were put forward to the government and have received administrative approval. The proposal was approved on May 28 during a Project Implementation Committee meeting.

Following this, the state administration gave the go-ahead for the procurement of the necessary equipment. As per a report by FPJ, the government has already sanctioned INR 28.57 crore for this purpose.

In addition to this, last month, the state government also approved INR 2.81 crore for the procurement of water coolers with purifiers for all the state's jails. The amount will be used to purchase 201 water coolers.

The goal is to make clean, drinkable water available to the inmates. A purifier will be installed near each prisoner's barrack. This is part of the Department of Prisons' recent initiatives to improve inmate care.

Last month, a Family Help Desk pilot programme was also launched to assist female inmates of the Mumbai District Women's Jail. This initiative was made in partnership with an NGO by Yogesh Desai, Deputy Inspector of Prisons, South Division, Mumbai.
