After the McDonalds food adultery row, Maharashtra has decided to increase its examination of fast-food chains, intending to investigate whether popular items promoted as having real cheese actually utilise cheese substitutes.

These checks will not only focus on McDonald's outlets but will extend to other global fast-food giants operating in the region for similar violations.

The aim is to ensure compliance with display and labelling regulations, particularly regarding the use of cheese in food products.

It threatens to cause a headache for global brands after recent inflationary pressure hit consumption of burgers and pizzas that are pricey for many Indian consumers, prompting firms to launch of discounted offerings.

As per sources, inspectors would visit Indian franchisee outlets of brands such as Domino's, Pizza Hut, Burger King and KFC.

Westlife's shares dropped by up to 6.7 per cent following the report, while Devyani's shares fell 4 per cent on Tuesday, February 27.

McDonald’s biggest India franchisee, Westlife Foodworld, has been defending its use of “real cheese” after media reported that state authorities last year found some products made use of so-called cheese analogues of vegetable oil, rather than real cheese.

Authorities have the power to suspend licences of restaurants found misleading consumers regarding food and safety standards.
