
Typically, mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and leptospirosis are more prevalent during the monsoon season. However, data from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) shows that outbreaks can also occur during winter and summer.
During the period January to 7 March 2026, thousands of cases of malaria, dengue, and chikungunya were reported. According to the state health department, there were:
1,335 malaria cases
823 dengue cases
234 chikungunya cases
The encouraging news is that no deaths were reported from any of these three diseases during this period.
For comparison, in 2025, the total reported cases were:
Malaria: 32,686 cases with 28 deaths; up to 7 March 2026, 2,336 cases reported
Dengue: 14,965 cases with 34 deaths; up to 7 March 2026, 253 cases reported with no deaths
Chikungunya: 1,184 cases with no deaths; up to 7 March 2026, 236 cases reported with no deaths
In Mumbai, mosquito-borne diseases have had the highest impact. In the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) area:
918 malaria cases were reported, of which 222 were of the Plasmodium falciparum type
104 malaria cases were imported from outside the city
182 dengue cases were reported
9 chikungunya cases were reported
