The use of Marathi language along with Hindi and English has been made mandatory in all central government offices, establishments, banks, insurance companies and railways in the state. Orders were given to the District Collectors on Monday, May 26, 2025, to strictly implement this decision.

According to the trilingual formula, Marathi, the state language, was made mandatory in all government offices. But the government has received complaints that Marathi is not being used in banks, telephone service companies, insurance companies, railways, metro and monorail, airports, petrol pumps and tax offices.

Also, various public representatives have raised this issue from time to time. That is why the government has decided to reissue the circular. This move is significant in the backdrop of protests by the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) demanding the use of Marathi language in banks and other establishments.

The move comes ahead of the local body elections due at the end of the year, in which the Shiv Sena (UBT) is likely to use the Marathi issue as its electoral shield.
