Report from the state health ministry showed that Maharashtra on Sunday, May 18, 2020, witnessed the highest single-day jump in coronavirus cases. With 2,347 cases and 63 deaths, the tally in Maharashtra reached 33,053 with 1,198 deaths.

On the other hand, coronavirus cases in Mumbai crossed 20,000-mark with 20,150 cases and 734 deaths. Report from Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) showed an increase in the tally with 18 new cases taking the count of COVID-19 patients to 330, out of which only 97 are active and 223 cases have recovered and discharged.

As of May 17, 2020, the list of containment zones in Mumbai have also reduced to 674. The report released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation shows a 75 per cent reduction in the number of containment zones, as officials have revised the list. Earlier, chawls and buildings were mentioned in the containment zones, but as per new guidelines, officials are including only areas which will be managed by the MLAs and BMC officials. Chawls and building need to be maintained by respective members and if needed, BMC would help in screening members in hotspots. 

Despite the number of red zones reducing in Mumbai, Maharashtra government has extended the lockdown until May 31, 2020, keeping the increasing cases in mind. Following the directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, guidelines will have to be followed for safety during the lockdown.
