After the first phase of Thane Municipal Corporation’s prestigious waterfront project (TMC) was going on smoothly, the project has been ordered to be shut down by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA). MCZMA has directed the civic body to stop the construction work of the project, as it does not have adequate permissions.

In an attempt to beautify the Thane creek, TMC had proposed the Waterfront project in Thane. A garden, along with a jogging track, bicycle track was proposed as a part of the beautification plan which would appeal the citizens to visit the coast.

The Thane Smart City Limited was being planned to be prepared as a part of the waterfront by the coasts of Mumbra, Kopri, Khareaon etc. and accordingly, a contract of ₹260 crore was given for the construction of seven places as a part of the first phase which began in January 2018. As a part of the project, the wetland area was filled up to 15 meters which led to a dispute between TMC and the environmentalists.

Rohit Joshi, an environmentalist from Thane stated that as the project was violating the regulations of the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), he had approached Bombay High Court in July 2018. While Joshi was fighting to shut the project down, a report revealed that TMC hadn’t taken permissions for some crucial work which revealed the project was not environment-friendly.

After which the MCZMA intervened and asked TMC to shut down the project and halt the work as the civic body had violated the CRZ regulations and hadn’t asked for permissions.
