As Cyclone Biparjoy delayed the arrival of monsoon, the water level in the dams supplying water to Mira Bhayandar has decreased to an alarming level. The level of Barvi Dam in Badlapur, which is the major of water supply to the twin-city, is currently about 27 per cent.

Owing to this, the water supply department of Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has decided to impose water cut in the city. Accordingly, water supply will be off for 24 hours every fifteen days. This water cut has been implemented till July 15.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department has reviewed the levels of all the dams to check the water storage to overcome the crisis of water scarcity.

MIDC draws water from Barvi Dam and supplies it to MBMC and its areas including Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali, Navi Mumbai along with other industrial belts.

As against the requirement of over 225 MLD, the twin-city has an allotted supply of 221 MLD. It has been provided jointly by the MIDC (135 MLD) and Shahad Temghar (STEM) water supply authority (86 MLD).

Moreover, the twin-city also faces a demographic dilemma as it falls in the tail-end of the district, which further aggravates the water woes, due to low pressure due to the frequent shutdowns and repair work of ruptured lines.

Since 2009, installation of rainwater harvesting (RWH) system is mandatory for all constructions. However, the depletion of ground water table has resulted in severe water scarcity.
