As the number of coronavirus or COVID-19 cases are on the rise, the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has extended the shutdown in the region till May 21.

The home delivery of essential commodities will be allowed but grocery stores, vegetables and fruits sellers will remain shut. Grocery stores and other shops selling essentials were allowed to open earlier but the MBMC Commissioner in an order forbid the same in the wake of the increasing COVID-19 cases.

The same applies to grocery stores in malls and supermarkets. According to a report published in TOI, on Sunday, the Mira-Bhayandar region reported 18 positive COVID-19 cases, taking the toll to 330. Of these 97 cases are active while 10 deaths have been recorded.

The Maharashtra government has also extended the lockdown till May 31 and no relaxation has been provided in the red zones areas including Mumbai and Pune which have the most COVID-19 cases in the state.

During his address on Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray pointed out that the lockdown was necessary as the state government doesn’t intend to close again if the cases rise.

“Suppose we lift the lockdown and the virus spreads like it did in Brazil, United States of America and Italy. We don’t want this to happen in Maharashtra,” Thackeray said.

The centre has also extended the nationwide lockdown till May 31. India has entered the fourth phase of the lockdown and has been under the same since March 25. As of May 19 morning, India crossed the one lakh-mark and has reported 1,01,139 COVID-19 cases while the cases in Maharashtra have reached 35,058.
