Owing to the sudden rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the Mira-Bhayandar area, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has decided to extend the total shutdown in the area for another five days from May 13 onwards.

However, the MBMC in an order issued on Tuesday allowed selling of fish on the footpath near the Subhashchandra Bose ground in Bhayandar (West) between 5:00 am and 9:00 am. Municipal Commissioner Chandrakant Dange told Mirror that the exception has been made to facilitate the Koli community living in Mira Bhayandar area. He added that fishing season will end by May 31 and after that, they will not be allowed to venture into the sea.

"They have been allowed to sell their catch till date so as to make some earnings," said Dange.

Meanwhile, apart from the designated spot, no other meat, fish, mutton, chicken shop or market has been permitted to open till May 17 midnight.

The new order also forbids grocery stores and other shops selling essential items to remain open till the midnight of May 17. This comes after the municipal corporation had previously eased lockdown in the area and allowed these shops to remain open between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. The grocery shops in malls and supermarkets also will not be allowed to sell to customers till the shutdown is eased.

While the shops selling fish, chicken and mutton, fruits and vegetables have been restricted from remaining open, they can carry out home delivery between 9:00 am and 11:00 pm. The order allows shops selling milk and dairy products to remain open between 7:00 and 11:00 am whereas pharmacies can remain open between 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Last week, MBMC had made some relaxation in the total shutdown by allowing electrical, home appliances' repair shops, opticals, hardware stores and motor garages to remain open between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. But after the area recorded a record spike of 33 COVID-19 cases on last Friday, the civic body withdrew the order, though grocery and essential stores were allowed to remain open. However, after the area recorded 14 and 7 cases in the next two days, the authorities decided to reconsider the partial relaxation norms.

On May 12, Tuesday, Mira-Bhayandar area recorded five new cases, taking the COVID-19 tally of the area to 262. So far, MBMC has recorded seven deaths. Currently, there are 105 active cases whereas 150 persons have recovered from the infection. With 57.25 per cent recovery rate, MBMC has one of the highest recovery rates in the country.
