In what can be termed as good news for Mira-Bhayander residents, the area recorded eight new cases on Wednesday. This is the first time in the last five days, the Mira-Bhayander region has registered cases in single-digit, indicating that the number of new cases has decreased.

The Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) was taken by surprise when the number of positive cases started increasing suddenly in the region. Following which, the civic body had announced a total shutdown in the area for four days, starting from April 20. In the last five days, MBMC had registered 54 new cases out of the total 114 cases. The lockdown in the area has now been extended till April 28. During this time only chemist shops can open in the area and that too only from 9am to 5pm.

MBMC Commissioner Chandrakant Dange told Mirror Online that this (only eight cases) is quite a milestone for them.

While it is too early to say that the sudden outbreak has been stopped, the residents will surely have breathed a sigh of relief. In the last five days, the figures in Mira-Bhayander have varied between 12-14 cases daily, setting panic and anxiety amid residents and health officials alike.

Commissioner Dange said that the decrease in the number of cases has been achieved through a two-way approach. First by imposing a total shutdown of all shops, barring pharmacies, and allowing only home delivery of essential items between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Secondly, the corporation stopped home sampling of suspected cases by private labs and self-declared testing centres which did not stop the suspected cases from meeting others till the reports came. This would result in further spread if the person was tested positive. The civic body then only allowed sampling at hospitals (private or government) while keeping the suspected cases in quarantine until the results came.
