The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Sunday, May 30, that the arrival of monsoons is likely to face a delay by two days, and will make an onset over Kerala by June 3.

According to reports, speaking about the same, IMD Director General M Mohapatra stated that there is cyclonic circulation along the Karnataka coast which is hindering the progress of the southwest monsoon. "The southwesterly winds could strengthen further gradually from 1 June, resulting in likely enhancement in rainfall activity over Kerala. Hence the monsoon onset over Kerala is likely to take place around 3 June," he informed.

Moreover, as a result of the strengthening of lower-level southwesterly winds, fairly widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy falls are very likely over northeastern states during the next five days.

On the other hand, the IMD had earlier informed that Cyclone Yaas has helped pull the monsoon flow over to the Arabian Sea due to which conditions have become favourable for the onset of the monsoon season. It further predicted for the onset of the monsoons to be over Kerala on Monday, May 31.

Furthermore, the Meteorological Department had earlier predicted a good start to the rains in June. It further added that if the water level is in good condition by June 30, the people of Mumbai will not face a water shortage. However, if the water level in the lake does not rise satisfactorily despite the rains, citizens living across the city may have to face water cuts.
