Kurla Building Collapse: 14 Died so far; Maharashtra Minister Declares INR 5 lakhs To Their Families

Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray, who visited Mumbai's Kurla following the collapse of the building, said that a notice was issued against the property but people continued to live there, adding that it should have been vacated earlier.

According to latest update, 14 people have died so far in the Kurla building collapse as on Tuesday afternoon, June 28.

In the cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, CM Uddhav Thackeray announced compensation of INR 5 lakhs each to the families of those who died in the incident

However, it has come to light that Maharashtra Minister Subhash Desai has announced free treatment for those injured in the building collapse. And INR 5 lakhs compensation to be given to the family of the deceased. The incident will be investigated and action will be taken against those responsible. A meeting has been called to ensure that such incident doesn't happen again.

On the other hand, one of the rebel MLA Mangesh Kudalkar announced a compensation of INR 1 lakh to families of injured and INR 5 lakhs to deceased person's family, which will be provided by Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, in the Kurla building collapse.

BMC chief in an official statement said that nine people have been treated and discharged, while four persons are admitted.

As on Tuesday morning, June 28, one person died and nine others have been injured as a wing of four-storeyed residential building collapsed in Kurla. However, nearly 10-12 are feared to be trapped inside, said local corporator Pravin Morajkar.

The incident took place on Monday late night, June 27 at Naik Nagar in Kurla East. The fire brigade officials said that they received a call at 11.52 pm. They immediately sent seven fire trucks, two rescue vans and ambulances. The fire brigade, however, said that there could nearly 20 people trapped inside.

The injured have been shifted to civic hospitals in Ghatkopar and Sion.

Meanwhile, officials have started search and rescue and it will take some seven to eight hours to complete.

Owing to this, buses of routes 5,85,58,59,60 diverted via Vatsalatai Naik nagar in Up direction instead of ST depot while going towards Kurla station East from 5.05 hrs.

A BMC official, while talking to reporters, mentioned: “D wing of the Naik Nagar Society collapsed last night. 12 people were rescued and 1 declared dead. Some people are still trapped. The building has been dilapidated and since 2013 notices were given to first repair and then demolish the building.”

After this mishap, the tenants of the remaining three wings will be shifted by BMC on Tuesday morning, June 28.

Besides, Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray, who visited Mumbai's Kurla following the collapse of the building, said that a notice was issued against the property but people continued to live there, adding that it should have been vacated earlier.

"Whenever BMC issues notices, (buildings) should be vacated themselves... otherwise, such incidents happen, which is unfortunate... it's now important to take action on this," Thackeray was quoted as saying by ANI.

"Around five to seven people were rescued. All 4 buildings were issued notices, but people continue to live there. Our priority is to rescue everyone... in the morning we'll look into evacuation and demolition of these buildings so that nearby people aren't troubled," he added.

On the other hand, Corporator Pravina Morajkar exclaimed that this is a colony of four dilapidated buildings and they were given notices to vacate five to six years back. Yet, the residents continued to stay. On Monday night, one building collapsed. But five to six people were removed from the debris before the fire brigade came. These are being treated and sent to hospitals for injuries.
