Mumbai is currently facing a hot and humid conditions, which has led to an increase in the city's electricity consumption. On Tuesday, May 21, the consumption peaked at 4,306 megawatts. This is the first time the city's power demand has crossed this threshold.

Nearly 50 lakh Mumbai residents contributed to this peak demand. Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited reported that the peak power demand surpassed 2,253 MW on May 21 at 3:45 pm, breaking the previous record of 2,161 MW set in June 2023. Adani Electricity serves about 29 lakh people in the suburbs and other areas of the Mumbai metropolitan region.

On the other hand, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply Transport (BEST) was supplying more than 910 MW to its 10.50 lakh customers. Further, Tata Power was meeting a demand of 1,050 MW from its 7.50 lakh customers. There was also an additional demand in the Bhandup and Mulund districts, which receive their supply from MSEDCL.

Adani Electricity’s Dahanu plant produces 500 MW, while Tata Power's Trombay plant produces around 800 MW. An additional 440 MW is generated from renewable energy. Meanwhile, the overall power demand in Maharashtra is around 26,000 MW.

In April, it was reported that the maximum demand in Mumbai had reached 4,100 MW. Tata Power had projected an additional demand of 50–150 MW between April and June. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission has given them permission to buy short-term power to meet this demand.

But this increased demand is forcing companies to purchase power from the open market, with prices going up to INR 12 per unit.
