The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced a detailed action plan for the monsoon season to make sure metro services run smoothly and that infrastructure projects are safe during heavy rains.
MMRDA’s Monsoon Action Plan for Metro and Infrastructure Safety:
1. Central and Onsite Control Systems
A 24x7 disaster control room is set up to handle complaints and share updates.
It will let the police, state government, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation connect.
Control centres at major project sites have engineers and workers on call all day.
2. Emergency Response Measures
Emergency Response Teams are being created with 10 workers and 1 engineer each.
Teams are ready to act fast during any emergency.
A fixed process is followed: the engineer checks the issue and informs the disaster unit and contractor teams.
3. Flood and Waste Control
Dewatering pumps are being used to remove water during floods.
Pothole repair vehicles are ready for use.
Garbage and waste are being cleared from construction sites.
Unfinished work is either completed or closed off safely.
Damaged dividers and drains are being repaired.
Mosquito control is done with fogging at casting yards.
Wind safety steps are also included.
88% of barricades from completed areas have been removed.
Bottoms of boards in active work zones have been sealed to help water flow.
Dewatering pumps are ready to clear water from low-lying spots.
4. Electrical Safety and Road Repairs
All electrical items are being checked to stop accidents.
Staff are ready to repair potholes quickly.
Drains and nallas in special areas (Bandra Kurla Complex, Wadala Truck Terminus, Oshiwara District Centre) are being cleaned.
Trees are being trimmed to avoid danger.
5. Metro Lines 2A and 7 Safety
All 34 trains on these lines have been checked for leaks and sealed.
30 stations and the Charkop depot had lightning arrestors, DG sets, UPS, and earthing systems checked.
Wind anemometers are installed at 10 key stations to measure wind speed.
Large electrical machines have been maintained to avoid any problem.
Each station now has over 64 CCTV cameras for better security.
Viaducts, roof gutters, and drain lines have been cleaned.
A special coach is ready to help the BMC disaster team during emergencies.
6. Communication and Response Coordination
Information is shared with MCGM and MBMC Emergency Centres.
Details are also passed to senior officials like the police and metropolitan commissioners.
Emergency Support Functions are started and followed until things return to normal.
7. Field-Level Safety Work
Emergency teams with engineers and workers are already in place.
Pothole repair machines and dewatering pumps are active.
Road barricades are removed or sealed to increase road space.
Trash is being cleaned, and broken structures repaired.
Work like piling is finished before rains.
MMRDA is following all MCGM safety rules during monsoon work.
Electrical checks and extra traffic staff are part of the safety plan.
8. Operations During Monsoon
Train service will run more frequently during floods.
30 stations and the Charkop depot had their DG sets, UPS, and lightning safety systems tested.
759+ insulators and other electrical parts are checked and maintained.
All trains passed water leak checks.
Drains at all stations and the 35-km Metro viaduct have been cleaned.
