Mumbaikars this morning, a day after Diwali, October 25, woke up to a smoky skyline, and the air quality index was recorded in the 'moderate' to 'satisfactory' category.

As per the latest survey by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the air quality in Mumbai remained in the poor category.

Moreover, it has come to light that the AQI in the overall Mumbai region was in the 'very poor' category. It is pertinent to note that, prior to Diwali, the air quality across Mumbai and Pune was ‘moderate’ and ‘satisfactory’, respectively.

Colaba recorded an AQI of 111 (moderate), Andheri at 193 (moderate), Bhandup 91 (satisfactory) and Navi Mumbai at 300 (poor). Several locations recorded AQIs in the 'poor' category after firecrackers went off over the weekend.

However, in Pune, the air quality was relatively better. At the Karve Road station in Pune, the air quality was at a moderate level with an AQI of 132.

Besides, on Sunday, October 23, the air quality over Mumbai dropped to the ‘unhealthy’ category. According to IQAir, an air quality monitoring website, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was measured at 153, which falls in the ‘unhealthy’ category. ‘Unhealthy’ AQI pose a serious threat to senior citizens and children.

The CPCB recorded an AQI value of 136 yesterday, on Monday, October 24, with the major pollutants being PM10 and PM2.5 in Mumbai.

In Andheri, AQI was in 'very poor' category at 358. In BKC and Borivali, the AQI remained 'poor' at 293 and 232 respectively. In Chembur and Malad, AQI was 'very poor' at 319 and 375 respectively. However, in Worli area, the air quality was in the 'satisfactory' category.

In Mumbai, an AQI of 166 was recorded at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, followed by an AQI of 162 at Deonar and 160 at Kurla and Sion.

The experts have attributed the deteriorating air quality to the ongoing festive season and said the AQI will drop further after the end of the festive season.
