Mumbai Customs is working on a plan to reduce the customs clearance time for foreign passengers from 10 minutes to 5 minutes. The plan will use automation and artificial intelligence tools to make the process faster and smoother. This will ease traffic and improve passenger flow at airports.
The new system, called CAPIT, will replace manual profiling and random checks. It will use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to flag baggage electronically. These flags will be linked to passenger records. Earlier, officers used chalk or pens to mark baggage. Now, the entire process will be handled digitally.
This information was shared in a talk on “Airport passenger infrastructure through innovation” held in Mumbai on June 11 and 12. It will host over 3,000 attendees from the aviation, infrastructure, and regulatory sectors.
Mumbai Customs, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and terminal heads from both Mumbai airport and Navi Mumbai airport were part of the panel.
India currently has over 2,200 aircraft in order. In the next 20 years, air traffic in the country is expected to rise sharply. This brings two major challenges: keeping the country’s borders secure and ensuring smooth travel for thousands of passengers who follow the rules.
Mumbai alone handles around 22,000 to 25,000 international passengers every day. At present, the average customs clearance time is about 10 minutes. Mumbai Customs is trying to bring it down to 5 minutes.
Planning at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) focuses on digital solutions. It includes tools for real-time terminal management and airside operations. As per reports, NMIA will use advanced technology such as rapid exit taxiway simulations. This will help in quicker aircraft movement and better passenger handling.
Interestingly, despite the current load, Mumbai airports perform well in terms of global efficiency. The operations teams continue to deliver strong results.
