The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all government, private, and municipal schools and colleges in Mumbai on Monday, July 6, following an Orange Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

The precautionary measure has been taken to ensure the safety of students as the city is expected to experience intense monsoon conditions. While educational institutions will remain closed, all government and private offices will continue to operate as usual.

In its advisory, the BMC urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and venture outdoors only when essential. The civic body warned that heavy rain and strong winds could disrupt road and rail services, cause waterlogging in low-lying areas, and increase the risk of tree falls.

The Thane District Administration has declared a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli on Monday, July 6, 2026, due to IMD's heavy rainfall warning.

The IMD has forecast continued heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds across the city, prompting authorities to closely monitor the evolving weather situation.

Owing to this, water levels in lakes supplying to Mumbai see the biggest jump for the first time to 13.19% on July 5 from 9.41% a day ago, July 4.

The advisory comes after several rain-related incidents were reported across Mumbai over the past week, including multiple cases of trees collapsing due to strong winds and waterlogged soil.
