The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has prepared a proposal for water reduction as the possibility of getting water from the reserve reservoirs of Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna dams has faded. Therefore, there is a high possibility that 10 percent water cut will be implemented across Mumbai from March 1.

Only 45.43 percent of water is left in all the seven dams that quench Mumbai's thirst. This is the lowest water storage in the last three years. As this water will not be enough till the monsoon season, the civic body has written to the state government to demand that the reserve water from Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna should be obtained. But even after 10 days, the government has not responded. Therefore, sources informed that the water cut proposal has been sent for administrative approval.

The seven dams that supply water to Mumbai namely Upper Vaitrana, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitrana, Bhatsa, Vihar, Tulsi have a total of 657 thousand 546 million liters or 45.43 percent of water storage.

Demand for reserves in March itself
Due to the decrease in the stock in the dams, the time has come for the municipal corporation to ask for water from the reserve stock only in March. In June last year, the state government accepted the municipality's demand for reserve stock due to heavy rains. Therefore, water shortage was avoided. However, 10 percent reduction had to be done in July due to rain again. It was canceled in August 2023 after water storage reached 81 percent.
